Certainly the revelation of Scripture is by the Holy Spirit is in His time. I have not only read and used this passage countless times for instruction but only yesterday did I see the full implication of this, so read it with me again then I will make my remarks:
Romans 1:28-32
28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the
knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do
what ought not to be done. 29
They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and
depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are
gossips, 30 slanderers,
God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil;
they disobey their parents; 31
they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s
righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only
continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. First they didn't retain the knowledge of God. Second God gave them over to a depraved mind. Third they do what ought not to be done. Forth they are filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. Then comes envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. Which them into gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful, they invent ways of doing evil, they disobey their parents, and they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love and no mercy.
Do you see it? Among all these detestable sins whats included? I was shocked to have my eyes opened.
So here are sins that are what we would sins of a twisted, vile heart and this inclusion almost seems out of place. Now we know that the only judgement of severity of sin comes from carnal man. God sees every sin as sin. All equal. None worse than another. "If you break on of these commandments you have broken them all." The only difference between sins is the consequence or punishment that is received when they are committed. A slap on the hand for stealing a cookie from Mom's cookie sheet, vs. the death penalty for murder. But still both are sin in the eyes of God. Thou shalt not steal and thou shalt not commit murder are commandments to be kept not broken but when broken both are sin.
To the point:
In the middle of these mentioned "depraved sins" the words "disobey their parents" appears.
I would doubt that the carnal mind would list this disobedience as "depraved", but it does. In fact it is also under the consequence of deserving death, vs. 32.
in the OT a rebellious child was to be turned over to the priesthood if all other measures failed to correct them. If the priesthood failed to deliver a change in the child they were to be stoned to death. That's what God's Word says about rebellion to parents.
Wow what a difference to today's application of corrections. Safe rooms, cry rooms, time outs, counting to 10. Laughable. Stubbornness=the rod with Loving discipline that brings to repentance.
We ought to be applying God's Word by His Spirit instead of wresting it with our carnal minds.
I hope this brings a new light on obedience and how necessary it is both to parents and more so to God's Word.
Disobedience is placed in the same pool of sin that carries the consequence of death.
Reflect on this.
